Binder Jetting

3D Printing, 3DP, Drop-on-powder

Two materials are used during this process – a powder-basedmaterial and a, usually liquid, binder. First, powder is spread over the building platform. An inkjet printhead then applies the adhesive binder on top of the powder where required. After, the building platform is lowered according to the part's layer thickness and the process is repeated until the object is completed.

Selective Laser Melting

Laser Melting, Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), Laser Cusing, Laser Beam Melting

Thin layers of metal powder are spread out on the building platform. They are then melted and fused by a laser beam and the object is built up layer by layer. Selective laser melting is a Powder Bed Fusion process.

Selective Laser Sintering

Laser Sintering, SLS

Like Selective Laser Melting, Selective Laser Sintering is a Powder Bed Fusion process, fusing thin layers of non-metallic powders with a laser beam and completing the object layer by layer.

Electron Beam Melting

EBM

Electron Beam Melting is a Powder Bed Fusion process that requires a vacuum and uses metal powders. A thin layer of metal powder is spread out on the building platform and then melted and fused by an electron beam, building up the part layer by layer.

Fused Deposition Modeling

FDM, Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), Fused Layer Modeling or Fused Layer Manufacturing (FLM)

Fused Deposition Modeling is a common material extrusion process. Material is heated and deposited by a nozzle layer by layer where required and cures while cooling down. The material is fed into the nozzle from a material spool. Material has to be fed from the nozzle under constant pressure and in a continuous stream.

Multi-Jet Modeling

MJM, Material Jetting, Drop on Demand, Inkjet Printing

Process description: this process is similar to the principle of a 2D inkjet printer. Material is jetted through a nozzle onto the build platform either continuously or by drop on demand. The material layers are then cured using UV light.

Stereolithography

VAT Polymerisation, SLA

The layers are built up by curing liquid photopolymer resins with a UV laser. The building platform is lowered layer by layer after each new layer is cured and the UV laser is applied where required in order to create the structure of the part.

PolyJet

Photopolymer Modeling, Polyjet Modelling, Multijet Modelling, Jetted Photopolymer

The process is similar to Multi-Jet Modeling (see above) but is only using photopolymers.

CNC Milling

Computerized Numerical Control CNC Machining

CNC machines are tooling machines that are able to process Custom parts automatically and with high accuracy, usually on 5 axes. The machine is operated and controlled by a computer using CNC. In CNC milling workpieces are fixed and processed and cut with a rotating tool
